Hotel Guest Reviews of the 40 Berkeley Hostel

Our hotel ratings and reviews are from real hotel guests. Priceline.com ensures that its reviews are guests-only by proactively sending hotel surveys to customers after they've completed their hotel stays. In the post-stay surveys, priceline.com hotel customers are asked a number of questions about their stay and the hotel. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, the survey asks guests to rate their overall experience and specifically rate the hotel's cleanliness, staff and location. Priceline.com does not allow site visitors to post unsolicited hotel reviews.

The staff and amenities were fantastic. The location and proximity to a T stop were great as well.
It's a hostel, so the room felt like a dorm room and it was weird using shared bathroom space, but all of that was to be expected.

Our expectations were definitely exceeded by the friendly staff, great amenities, tasty breakfast, and awesome location of this hostel. Be warned, though, the rooms are quite small and very dorm-like, but that's to be expected for a hostel. As far as hostels go, I don't know if you can find better than this.

Location and price was OK.
Uncomfortable bed and showers.

It was a one night stay so i was tired and didn't pay much attention to the hostel's conditions. I was affraid to use the shower. Noise behind the wall was annoying but i fell asleep fast. Location and staff were the best. 15 minutes walking from South Station, 5 min walking to Boston's Library. Staff was friendly and helpful. I would stay there again but only for a night or two. No more. ...read more

This hotel was a block from the Back Bay conference center, and less than half the price of other places in the area. The staff helped me find parking, the place was clean and well maintained. Everybody was friendly.
The Hostel still has the original windows on it from the 50's so the street noise fills the room starting at ~5:00am. While most places don't like to advertise what they don't have, they should mention that there is NO FREE PARKING, which costs $28/day.

If you're able to get to Boston via mass transit, then this is a great way to save money, on an ideally located room, during the school year. Try to ask for a room that doesn't face the street, because they get noisey very early. Breakfast is a social event, and everybody seems entitled. The people at the front desk are a lexicon of information, and they have free mini maps too. The floors sport one dormitory style bathroom each, and the whole place shines and smells clean. The individual room amenities are sparse, no telephone(wake up call), no refrigerator, no alarm clock, no TV or Movies, they do have a Movie Room downstairs, no air conditioning, although there is a ceiling fan. ...read more

One of the best complimentary breakfasts I've had at a hotel. Great public areas with pool tables, movie room, work areas, etc.
Power outlets in the room didn't have ground prongs. Shower pressure was too high. Bathroom smelled a bit.

Good location, friendly staff, accomodation is modest but very good for the money.

This is a cheap hotel with very good value for the price you pay. Good location. Helpfull staff. Recommend for students who cannot afford more expensive hotels.

The staff are very helpful and the lobby frequently had snacks and they host activities a lot
Keep in mind that the rooms are tiny and showers are in communal bathrooms in the halls. It is pretty much a college dorm building but the lobby is nice.

Great way to save money, great location in a nice area and close to Back Bay attractions and 5 minutes or less from subway. It is exactly like a dorm. Free breakfast (french toast, eggs, bacon, sausage)

The location is wonderful. The full breakfast that's included is a real steal. The staff is very friendly.
The room was extremely hot. The heat is a radiator that can't be controlled. Despite the fact that it was a cold night, I had the fan running on high all evening, to try and neutralize the extreme warmth.

This is a great place for budget travellers. The rooms are clean, the location ideal. Because it's a hostel, there's also the opportunity to meet fellow travellers. The staff is very friendly, and willing to assist in setting up tours, advice for how to use the MBTA (Boston's subway system), etc.
