Hotel Features
The seven-floor, non-smoking Hotel Rex is inspired by the art and literature of San Francisco in the 1920s and 30s and modeled after the Algonquin Hotel in New York, a famous gathering place for writers. With walls lined with paintings by local artists and many cozy sitting areas, this hotel is eager to encourage lively conversation, and often hosts literary get-togethers and books signings in its lobby bar. The 94 charming rooms feature custom wall coverings, painted lampshades and other artisan touches, along with pillowtop mattresses, mini-fridges, iPod docks, flat-panel TVs and free Wi-Fi. With Max, the hotel's pug mascot, often in residence, it's not surprising that the place welcomes guests' pets, too — minus any extra fee. Free wine hours are hosted each evening, and there is often live jazz in the lobby. The on-site café serves a breakfast buffet and dinner; parking is available for a fee.

Hotel Location
Hotel Rex is one block — or about a three-minute walk — from the heart of Union Square, with all its upscale shopping and dining. The Theater District, Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Gardens are also within walking distance, and one block away is a cable car stop that can whisk you to Chinatown, North Beach or Fisherman's Wharf. The hotel is 14 miles from San Francisco International Airport and 20 miles from Oakland International.
