The Spread Eagle Inn is renowned for its food, both locally and throughout Norfolk. The restaurant offers fine modern British cuisine, freshly prepared and cooked. Wherever possible, dishes are made using the finest, freshest produce available locally. The menu changes on a monthly basis to reflect the best seasonal ingredients in the region. The restaurant has received an AA Rosette for the outstanding preparation of its food and the good quality of the ingredients it uses. The restaurant has made the inn a real destination venue. The restaurant is open for lunch from Thursday to Sunday and in the evenings from Monday to Saturday. Booking is advisable, particularly at weekends.The Barton Bar is a great place to relax, eat and drink. The bar offers an extensive range of fine wines, real ales, cider, larger, spirits and soft drinks. Light lunches and a full à la carte menu are available at lunchtimes.
Room Information
The old cart sheds and the blacksmith's forge have now been converted to form the inn's newly built accommodation. These historic buildings have been sensitively renovated to ensure that they remain in keeping with the village's charming aesthetics. The furnishings are luxurious and contemporary, without compromising the building's authentic traditional charm. There is one king-size double room, 2 double rooms and one twin room with disabled facilities. There is also a one-bedroom suite with a separate sitting room that can also accommodate 2 rollaway beds.
Area Information
The Spread Eagle Inn is situated in the heart of the village of Barton Bendish, a rural hamlet in beautiful west Norfolk. The inn is between the historic market towns of Swaffham, the location of Stephen Fry's hit TV series Kingdom, and Downham Market, with its famous ginger bread houses (so called as they are constructed of orange-coloured Norfolk carrstone). The inn is just 30 to 40 minutes' drive from the scenic north Norfolk and north-west Norfolk coast, making it a great base from which to explore both countryside and coast alike. West Norfolk boasts some of the best footpaths and bridleways for walkers and cyclists, with the famous roman path of Peddars Way and the scenic Nar Valley Way only a short distance from Barton Bendish. West Norfolk and the fens also offer some of the best fishing and shooting in the country and these time-honoured sports are still available for your enjoyment. If heritage is your passion, the area is also home to the National Trust's Oxborough Hall, home of the Bedingfeld family since the 1500s. The Royal Estate at Sandringham is also well worth a visit.For the children, the rare-breed animal farm at Stow Bardolph offers both enjoyment and an educational experience. For the birdwatchers, why not visit The Wild Fowl Trust at Welney, only a short drive away. For wildlife enthusiasts, Thetford Forest offers all kinds of flora and fauna, including wild deer, nightjars and barn, tawny and little owls.
