Hotel Guest Reviews of the Howard Johnson Express Inn - San Mateo

Our hotel ratings and reviews are from real hotel guests. Priceline.com ensures that its reviews are guests-only by proactively sending hotel surveys to customers after they've completed their hotel stays. In the post-stay surveys, priceline.com hotel customers are asked a number of questions about their stay and the hotel. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best, the survey asks guests to rate their overall experience and specifically rate the hotel's cleanliness, staff and location. Priceline.com does not allow site visitors to post unsolicited hotel reviews.

They remodelled, so it was way better than the pictures.
Pool was not totally clean.

I required for two separate beds cuz I'm traveling with my parents. All other hotels satisfied my request except Howard Johnson. So I had to pay another 50 bucks for a two-bed room in the end.

Overall this hotel is OK. However, I required for two separate beds cuz I'm traveling with my parents. All other hotels satisfied my request except Howard Johnson (there was one fantastic hotel that even gave us a free upgrade to a two-bedroom suite). So I had to pay another 50 bucks to switch to a two-bed room in the end. Perhaps I shouldn't complain about that cuz it might be the hotel policy not to exchange a one-bed room with a two-bed room with no cost. But if I compare Howard Johnson with other hotels, I felt not worth paying 130 bucks for a room at Howard Johnson while I paid only 100 bucks for a two-bedroom suite the next day (I used Priceline). ...read more

It was located within walking distance of the event center.
Their breakfast was not good.

The location was great for the event we were attending. The room was small but had everything we needed. Everything was clean and neat. WiFi. We didn't use the pool, but it looked nice. The breakfast was not good.

The décor in the room was nicer than I would have expected.
The alarm clock was broken so I requested a wake up call (and a taxi). No one called me, I woke up myself 10 minutes before my taxi was due to arrive. When I called the reception instead of apologizing the young lady gave me a whole lot of attitude.

The hotel is nice enough - rooms are newly decorated. Its a 20 minute walk from a large mall. There is a good Mexican (La Fonda) two blocks down. The cost of a taxi to the airport is $35 plus tax. My main complaint was with one staff member, the young lady on reception on May 9th. She was so unprofessional I was shocked. I called to ask why no one had called me, even though I'd seen the guy write down the request the night before. Instead of apologizing she copped a serious attitude insinuating that I hadn't requested the call Her (in a very defensive tone) - "I don't have a request for a call just for a taxi." A simple "I'm sorry, I don't know how your request was overlooked.." would have done the trick. The lack of an apology and the attitude was the problem - not overlooking the call (I realize that people make mistakes). ...read more

This was our 3rd stay, close to where we were going, friendly staff, nice room, a lil noisy in the middle of the night but that's not the hotels fault, just the people coming to their rooms!

Sanjeev was great. Room was spacious and quiet. Nice jumping off space for business in financial district SanFrancisco next day. Would stay there again.
No

Great room for the price. Found very nice taqueria nearby for authentic Mexican dinner.

The remodeled rooms are great the non-remodeled room are no good.
Parking can be a problem if you get there late in the evening.

I liked the breakfast room which was always well maintained and stocked. Like may motels however there is very little protein available, mostly carbs.

updated room with hardwood floor
ants in bathroom, no ice bucket, unreliable housekeeping, fire alarm went off twice with no apology or explanation, tiny parking spaces

they are attempting an upgrade but are keeping such things as rusty towel racks which is pretty cheezy.
