LAS VEGAS

About Las Vegas

Las Vegas As the second most popular travel destination in the country and called "The Entertainment Capital of the World," Las Vegas amuses a staggering 32 million visitors a year. The famous 4-mile stretch known as the "Strip" is aglow with flashing neon, all-night casinos and major hotels like Caesars Palace, The Mirage, MGM Grand, and so many more. Travel further downtown to popular Freemont Street - blanketed by an impressive laser light canopy - gives tourists a taste of Old Vegas. There is more here than just casinos and entertainment venues. The city boasts many museums, art galleries, amusement parks, and historical sites. Natural attractions abound on all sides, including picturesque views of Red Rock Canyon, numerous recreational opportunities atop Mt. Charleston, and water sports on Lake Mead. Nearby are the Grand Canyon, Valley of Fire, and Death Valley.

Boasting "magnificent" standard rooms ("the nicest in town"), this "explosion of old-world Venice" in the "heart of the Strip" dazzles with "all the amenities you could ask for", including the "unbeatable" Canyon Ranch Spa, a "don't-miss" Guggenheim museum, "wondrous" dining (the newest comes courtesy of David Burke) and "unbelievable shopping" options along the Grand Canal ("with singing gondoliers"); still, if critics cite "hot and cold" service or snipe that you'll need "rollerblades" to get to the exclusive Venezia Tower, supporters say their "top-notch" "favorite" is "almost as nice as the real thing, though much glitzier"; N.B. a third tower, Palazzo, opens post-Survey.

"The grand old" ruler "continues to satisfy" with a "convenient" Strip location, "the prettiest swimming pool in Vegas", "to-die-for shopping" at the adjacent Forum Shops and a "top-of-the-line restaurant selection" (an outpost of NYC's Rao's and Payard opened post-Survey); voters say the newer Augustus Tower rooms are "fit for a king" with "spectacular" marble bathrooms and "better amenities" than the "run-down" older rooms, and while loyalists rave it "still manages to get it right", brutish types bemoan that this "too crowded" emperor of Sin City is "riding on the coattails of his past success"; N.B. the Forum Tower is undergoing renovations, and a new Octavius Tower will open in 2009.

"Conveniently located at the end of the monorail" on the south end of the Strip, the "biggest hotel in the world" (5,000 rooms and growing) provides "plenty of upscale restaurants" and "many entertainment options", making it good for "groups, gambling and partying"; rooms are "comfortable" and those in the new West Wing have a "more intimate", "boutique feel", plus "the river pool is great for lounging", but critics say a property so big you need a "GPS to find your way around" makes for "spotty" service.

December wouldn't be complete without this kickoff to the National Finals Rodeo. You'll see plenty of cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats as folks pack the Fremont Street area to catch great country music. Live acts from two stages entertain crowds, and a flashy light show adds to the appeal. Don't worry, your slot machine winnings are safe admission is free. A downtown institution for over twenty years.

Las Vegas BikeFest

850 Las Vegas Blvd N, Cashman Center, Las Vegas, NV - 89101, 702-450-7662

This rambunctious event draws tens of thousands of folks from all over the country and most of them come with, or on, a motorcycle. For four days, the hum of electric lights is underscored by the purr of well-tuned machinery, and attendees indulge in Sin City's attractions as well as in the festival's own happenings. Affiliated with BikeFest are custom bike exhibits, vendor displays, competitions, the naming of Mr. and Miss BikeFest, and much more. Register early to avoid disappointment from sold-out events.

Las Vegas Helldorado Days

S 4th St at Fremont St, Fremont East, Las Vegas, NV - 89101

Originally, Helldorado Days was developed as a community-building event meant to entice workers to stay in southern Nevada after finishing construction of the Hoover Dam. The plan worked, and the event has now evolved into a charity fundraiser featuring a golf tournament, art auction and show, poker championship, trap shooting contest, trail ride, two rodeos, and additional equine events. The downtown parade filled with colorful floats is a favorite with families, as are the fireworks show and concerts held at Fremont East.

SCORE Las Vegas Terrible Cup

7000 Las Vegas Blvd N, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV - 89115

For the nonstop excitement of off-road desert racing, the SCORE Terrible Cup can't be beat. Making its home at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Dirt Track, the race features all the speed, danger, and roaring noise that characterize the best of this fast-paced sport. Watch in awe as suspensions are severely tested on the bumpy, dusty course, and root for your favorite driver. Great fun for racing aficionados.

Vegas Valley Book Festival

231 W Charleston, Contemporary Arts Collective, Las Vegas, NV - 89102, 702-382-3886

Whether you're a literary nut or just an insatiable reader, this festival is certain to elicit delight. Authors from around the country are featured in panel discussions, writer workshops, and book signings and that's just to start. Often, local writers and topics (including poker, gambling, Las Vegas history, and boxing) are the focus. Most events take place at the Contemporary Art Collective at Holsum Lofts, but there are additional activities throughout the city (especially downtown) and in Henderson.

World Series of Poker

3700 W Flamingo Rd, Las Vegas, NV - 89103, 800-752-9746

Dating back to the early 70s, this hugely popular tournament was essentially the creation of casino owner Benny Binion. Although it started rather small, today, it's a huge event, attracting many enterprising poker players and fans. The main game is a Texas hold 'em tournament, which requires a buy-in of $10,000; its winner ends up being an instant multi-millionaire.
