Set in the "very scenic" Texas Hill Country, this "well-maintained" Arnold Palmer design is "fair but demanding", with "a few blind shots" and "dramatic changes in elevation on many holes" ("danger lurks on all sides"); it may not be as well-known as its sibling, but it "has character", leading some to argue it's "actually a nicer course" than the Resort; P.S. it's "on the expensive side" but comes complete with "a great hotel and facilities."

"Where else can you pay this little to play a course that [once] hosted a PGA Championship?" wonder those who recall the 1968 match-up in which Arnold Palmer lost to Julius Boros on the 18th; restored by Bob Cupp in 1998, it remains a "classic with tight fairways", "targeted doglegs" and "well-protected greens", and now that "new management is improving the conditioning", it almost "feels like a country club", albeit one that can be "enjoyed by all."

A "most unique" Keith Foster design that features two "totally different nines", this "gorgeous" San Antonio spread pairs a "treeless, links-style" front with a "spectacular back" "carved out of an old quarry"; "you'll think Satan's the greenskeeper" on the return, which can get "pretty steamy depending on the time of year", so "bring lots of water" to play a "really neat" layout that may have a "thermometer on the 18th" but is nevertheless "quite cool."

An "awesome" "roller-coaster ride" set at a "gorgeous resort" near San Antonio, this Weiskopf/Morrish design is home to the Valero Texas Open and offers "a little bit of everything", from an "interesting" 7th adjacent to the Six Flags amusement park to "dramatic views" from "tee boxes set on cliffs"; a "helpful staff" ups the ante, and regulars recommend warming up at the "nice practice facility", since the 665-yard opener "can be intimidating."

Although "right in the heart of San Antonio", "it doesn't feel like you're in the city" when traversing the tree-lined, "narrow fairways" on architect Randy Heckenkemper's "well-maintained" course; it's "right next to the airport", however, so "don't let the jet engines freak you out while putting on the slick greens"; P.S. it's "reasonably priced", with "super twilight fees", so "if you have three rounds in [the area], this should be in the rotation."
