I now understand why. Many of the hotel rooms are renovated, but some (especially the apartments and studios) are not. The service was wonderful - very friendly. The room was clean, but in poor condition. It had last been renovated in the late 1980s. It showed. The furniture did not match. There were notable amounts of rust around the room safe and shower head. The water took two minutes to get warm, five to ten to get hot. The balcony had a breathtaking ocean view, but the sliding door was insulated on the sides with old newspaper and was missing one of the handles. The room was large, but curiously had only a full-size bed. The renovated rooms are better than that (I'd say about 3 American Stars, 4 European Stars), and the common areas were nice. The pools and fitness center are well-maintained. The beach has a large area of relatively shallow water, making it fantastic for kids. Recommended for beach area and location on the Island. Not recommended as far as quality of rooms, cleanliness, and lack of courtesy at front desk. The restaurants have bad service and mediocre food at inflated prices.
