Service was excellent and rooms exceeded expectations.
Public spaces were under construction.
The entire service team was excellent, starting with an early check-in and helpful front desk staff. The doormen was equally as accommodating, arranging for a cab for us. Lobby was small but comfortable. The hotel was under construction but it never interfered with our stay. However, the 17th (top) floor, where the pool was located, was in the middle of construction.

Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful.
Non-smoking room on a non-smoking floor still smelled like cigarette smoke.

Staff was always asking how you were and if you needed anything.
Would have liked to have known they were going through renovations ahead of time.
The staff was awesome. The breakfast was okay but wasn't restocked when I arrived with an hour left in the service. The fire alarm went off at 4AM and after trudging down 5 flights of steps and standing on the curb of Michigan avenue for a half hour we were told it was a false alarm but no apology or compensation was offered for the major inconvenience.

Front desk staff was excellent and friendly. All the staff I ran into made me glad to be in Detroit.
Late night dining.
Loved staying at this hotel. Little older, some construction, painting, etc. going on. The staff was the best part. Everybody I met were friendly and very helpful. It's nice in this day and age to feel welcome and appreciated. Thank you staff at Detroit Holiday Inn Express.

The continental breakfast was good. Thats about it!
Checking in was a pain, The pool was supposed to be open but was closed!
Overall I was very disappointed with the hotel. I called and made a request for a double bed, when we got there, there were none available. I was told to check back later. As I got to my floor, there was a lady and several children getting on to the elevator to leave since the pool was closed and they were there for a pool party. She told me she had a suite, so I decided to go downstairs and see if there was anyway I could be upgraded. The lady at the desk told me the suite I was inquiring about was a single, however they had one available on one of the floors that they were painting on. She gave me a key and had me go take a look. After returning and telling her I'd take the room, I was informed that it wouldn't be a free upgrade, it was going to cost me $109 more per night. When I told her that was not going to work for me, conveniently a double bed opened up. It was more then a hassle checking in, for a very sub par hotel. read more

Complimetary breakfast.
Doors where so spring loaded, people slamming them. No sleep until after 3:30.
1st night was unbearable - jazz festival going on, so people coming in all night slamming doors. Also, we have stayed at this hotel before & was looking forward to the pool, but it was closed. Sorta feel I was short changed.
