Excellent, friendly staff, authentic Costa Rican ambiance and beautiful renovated coffee plantation house.
I highly recommend this hotel. Beautiful view of mountains, excellent renovation of traditional Costa Rican coffee plantation home, very friendly, helpful staff, convenient location in the city yet quiet.

The location was walking distance to museums, but unsafe area at night.
Musty, needs updating, pool and courtyard under construction.
Very musty, no ambiance at all, disinterested manager, dirty under construction courtyard and pool.

Cheap.
Renovation.
Very basic, a little too much noise, lots of renovation. Unfortunately, the restaurant was also closed for renovation. So, I ate a few protein bars for dinner that night. All in all, a cheap place to stay for one night on the way in or out of San Jose, but nothing more.

Former coffee plantation house, very nice.
The pool was under construction and I could not find the hot tub.

Surprising ambience.
No street presence.
When driving up to this hotel you may be tempted to keep driving. The street is grimy and eerily empty at night. But once you step into the lobby and are greeted by a very hospitable staff (as well as the owner), you find a very pleasant space with huge rooms and a small private pool. The owner wants to make you stay a pleasant one. They are currently renovating, and planning to add eleven more rooms. read more

Nothing.
Everything.
This hotel was in a horrible area. Hotel was in a center of the city, 30 min from airport and it is nowhere near 3 stars.

Staff was really friendly.
Too small and uncomfortable, rooms no closet and really small.

This hotel is downtown, in the middle of it, and a nice retreat in the city, find comfort in an older, well-cared for hotel. Nice pool area.
Liked most everything.
This was our family's one-night stay in San Jose (took 5 rooms) on the way to the coast for a wedding, if you don't want to stay in chain hotels, you will love the feel of this old, well-cared for hotel. It was clean and secure in downtown area. Rooms are large. Pool was fun (and clean) for the children and breakfast was great. We had apps and drinks by the pool too. Entire family was happy with our accommodations and the service at hotel Santo Tomas. read more
